How the factors are calculated

Country-level grid electricity factors are now hosted on CaDI, the Carbon Database Initiative: our free-to-use, free-to-disclose carbon intelligence platform. These are needed for organisations reporting their carbon emissions.

The factors are calculated based on each country's electricity fuel mix, drawing on government emissions releases collated from multiple authoritative sources by Carbon Footprint Ltd.

Emissions per kWh vary significantly by country based on the generation mix. Nations with a higher share of fossil fuels have higher intensity than those with more renewables or nuclear capacity.

The emission factors published by Carbon Footprint Ltd are open source and built into our online carbon calculators. If a country factor is missing and you have a credible source, please contact us so we can add it to future releases.

Note: The production mix factors here are for location-based reporting. For market-based reporting, use your electricity provider's factors, or the residual mix if those are unavailable.
